Start with how the garden is used after dark. Light the path from the gate or driveway to the door first, then add bollards or pillar lights at changes of direction and entries, and finish with spotlights on one or two feature plants or walls.
Solar lights suit spots with good daytime sun and no nearby power. Hardwired and low-voltage lights give steadier, brighter light and should be installed by a licensed electrician. Check the IP rating on each product: IP65 or higher suits most exposed garden positions in Australia.
Warm white (around 3000K) flatters planting, timber and stone; cooler white is better kept for security lighting.
